Brief introduction to subject:
The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Music Performance is designed for learners who wish to pursue a vocationally relevant qualification in the music performance sector. Learners are given the opportunity to gain understanding and practical skills in a variety of areas including Music Theory & Harmony, the Music Industry, and of course musical performance as both a soloist and a member of an ensemble.
Key Points:
- A Nationally recognised Level 3 vocational qualification.
- No exams; assessment is through internally and externally assessed coursework submission.
- You will build a portfolio of music work as you progress through the course, which is perfect to show to future employers or educational institutions.
Course Requirements
GCSE Music - Grade 4
OR
BTEC Level 2 Music - Grade Merit
The ability to play an instrument or sing is hugely beneficial.
Unit 1 - Practical Music Theory & Harmony
Learners will study the vital music theory that will help them as a musical performer, such as the ability to read music in a number of formats, and create melodies and chord sequences.
Unit 2 - Professional Practice in the Music Industry
Learners will study the key organisations and roles within the music industry, and consider their place within it.
Unit 3 - Ensemble Music Performance
Learners will discover how to successfully work as a member of an ensemble to devise, rehearse and give a performance.
Optional Unit
Learners will choose one of the following three optional units:
- Music Performance Session Styles, where they will explore the styles of music encountered in the role of a session musician and produce a portfolio of performances in those styles.
- Solo Music Performance, where they prepare and perform music as a soloist in front of an audience.
- Improvising Music, where they develop the ability to improvise when performing in a range of musical styles.
This vocational qualification supports learners to enter employment in the Music or Performing Arts sector, or to progress to a Higher Education qualification such as a degree in Music, Popular Music or Music Performance.
